ZEBRA MUSSEL ALERT
The zebra mussel is a black and white striped bivalve mollusc which was introduced into North American waters through the discharge of ship ballest water. Since its discovery in Lake St. Clair in 1988, the zebra mussel has spread throughtout the Great Lakes, the Mississippi River system and much of New York State, including Lake Champlain and the Hudson River. This mussel can clog power plant, industrial, and public drincking water intakes, foul boat hulls and engine colling systems, and disrupt aquatic ecosystems.
YOU CAN HELP slow the spread of the zebra mussel and prevent your own equipment from being fouled by following these suggestions.
BEFORE LEAVING A BOAT LAUNCH:
1.Thoroughly inspect trailer, boat hulls, drive units and other boat parts that get wet. Remove and discard any aquatic weeds.
2.Completely drain all water from the boat, including bilge water, live wells and engine colling system.
3.Whenever possible wash live wells and any other parts that get wet with tap water.
4.LEAVE LIVE BAIT BEHIND. Bait should not be transported to uninfested waters. Give to someone fishing the same body of water or dispose of it in a suitable container.
